Crest Hill's Postwar Subdivision Boom
The ground Crest Hill sits on was explored as early as 1673 by Louis Joliet and Père Marquette during their Mississippi River expedition, but the area stayed largely rural until a post-World War II building boom brought new subdivisions and veterans' housing starting in the 1940s. Crest Hill incorporated as a village on January 22, 1960 -- in part to keep tax revenue from a shopping center under development rather than see it annexed by the City of Joliet -- with 5,887 residents at incorporation.

Crest Hill became a city in 1969, and continued subdivision construction pushed its population to 7,460 by 1970, a 26.7% jump in a single decade. That means most Crest Hill homes carry postwar-era window openings from the 1950s and 60s -- generally more standardized sash sizes than the older housing stock closer to downtown Joliet, which usually makes them more straightforward to fit with a modern replacement unit.
