Minooka's Founding at "The Summit"
Minooka was established in 1852 when the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad laid track from Chicago to Ottawa through the area; railroad surveyor Ransom Gardner purchased 500 acres in the northeast corner of Grundy County and platted the town, which railroad workers nicknamed "the summit" for being the line's highest point. Early settler Dolly Smith named the town after a Potawatomi word meaning "good land" or "high place," and the village organized its earliest institutions in the 1850s and 60s -- the Minooka Methodist Episcopal Church in 1856 and St. Mary's Church in 1862 -- before incorporating in 1869.
